More Than 1,000 Protected Hermit Crabs Found in Hotel Room of Two Chinese Nationals Arrested on Amami Island

More than 1,000 additional protected hermit crabs have been discovered in the hotel room of two Chinese nationals who were previously arrested for illegally capturing the animals on Amami Oshima, Kagoshima Prefecture.
The suspects, Jinhui Dong (28) and Zhongjie Huang (33), both Chinese nationals with no fixed address or known occupation, were arrested on June 24 on suspicion of violating Japan’s Cultural Properties Protection Act after allegedly capturing 12.8 kilograms of protected Okinawan hermit crabs without government permission.
According to Amami Police, the two suspects told investigators after their arrest that additional hermit crabs were being kept at the accommodation where they were staying.
Police searched the lodging on June 25 and discovered more than 1,000 additional hermit crabs. The animals have since been transferred to a specialist conservation facility in Amami City, where officials will determine the exact number and assess their condition.
The Okinawan hermit crab is a National Natural Monument in Japan, and capturing or possessing it without official authorization is prohibited by law.
The case follows a similar incident in May 2025, when three Chinese nationals were arrested and later convicted for allegedly capturing 5,200 protected hermit crabs on Amami Oshima for commercial purposes.

Chinese National Arrested After Porsche Crash Injures Three in Tokyo

A 23-year-old Chinese national has been arrested and referred to prosecutors after allegedly causing a high-speed traffic accident that injured three people in Tokyo.
According to investigators, Zhendá Xu allegedly lost control of a Porsche while attempting to make a right turn at an intersection in Tokyo’s Bunkyo Ward on June 9. The car struck a curb before crashing into two vehicles in the opposite lane, leaving three people with minor injuries.
Police say the Porsche was traveling at approximately 100 km/h (62 mph) just before the collision, despite the road having a speed limit of 60 km/h (37 mph) or lower.
Xu reportedly admitted to the allegation, telling investigators, “I wanted to turn quickly because I didn’t want to get caught at the traffic light and waste time.”
Authorities also suspect he was driving without a valid license, as the Philippine international driving permit he presented is believed to have expired.
The case comes as Japan moves to strengthen penalties for extreme speeding. Revised legislation, expected to take effect later this summer, allows prosecutors to apply the offense of dangerous driving causing injury or death to crashes involving speeds exceeding the limit by 50 km/h or more on roads with speed limits of 60 km/h or less.
