MATCH OF THE WEEK - Callies United (M) vs Edmonton BTB SC (M) on August 7, 2026

A Friday night at Setters Place in Red Deer, Alberta sets the stage for the APL regular-season finale between Callies United and Edmonton BTB SC.

It’s been a pleasure making time for APL football this season. Hopefully the league continues to grow toward a sustainable model where sponsorship and community partnerships can reduce the financial burden on the youth programs supporting many of these teams.

The regular season signed off with a one-sided contest, ending in a 7-0 win for Edmonton BTB SC.

0'-15'

  • BTB in a 3-2-5 in possession and 4-1-4-1 out of possession, which transitions into a 4-4-2 when Callies crosses the midfield line.
  • GOAL! 1-0 BTB.Very poor build-up from Callies playing from the back off the goal kick. They attempt a three-man combination, but a poor pass is intercepted on the edge of the box by BTB #3 David Doe. BTB immediately exploit the turnover in transition, and the cross finds #7 Tao Hein, who buries it.
  • Callies give the ball away far too easily, including several unforced turnovers when under little pressure. Lots of inaccurate and overhit passes going directly out for BTB throw-ins.
  • Callies in a 4-4-2 mid-block out-of-possession.
  • GOAL! 2-0 BTB. Excellent dribbling from BTB #11 David Moldovan-Falnicu on the right wing. He beats his man and creates a 2v1 overload in the right half-space, finding #13 Santino Rojas. Rojas delivers across goal to the box-crashing run of #3 David Doe, who arrives from deeper and slots it home.

15'-30'

  • Poor passing continues throughout Callies' build-up. They struggle to progress possession cleanly and consistently give the ball away.
  • Callies struggle mightily with tempo and decision-making in the final third. They slow attacks down when opportunities are there to accelerate and play forward, while rushing possession in moments where they would benefit from slowing down and recycling the ball.

30'–45'

  • GOAL! 3-0 BTB. BTB win the second ball from a long Callies goal kick. #13 Santino Rojas picks it up around midfield and is allowed to carry the ball unopposed all the way toward the box. Callies provide virtually no pressure on the ball or engagement of the ball carrier. Rojas takes advantage and produces an excellent finish into the bottom-left corner.
  • GOAL! 4-0 BTB. BTB build from the left before an excellent long ball from #3 David Doe releases #7 Tao Hein in behind the defensive line. The Callies defender has an opportunity to clear the bouncing ball but mistimes it, allowing Hein through 1v1. Hein calmly chips the goalkeeper for his second of the game.

I’m not going to watch the second half because why should I if Callies didn’t bother to show up? And I mean that almost literally because they arrived with 11 players and no substitutes.

From that first half, there was no discernible game plan. Just vibes and inshallah.

I understand the circumstances. This is a rescheduled fixture that was originally supposed to be played in Calgary and Callies are already guaranteed to finish last so the result is essentially meaningless and some players are due back with their U SPORTS programs next week. But none of that excuses the poor body language and general absence of competitive intensity we saw in that first half.

I am not naive to know that BTB are the better side. I watched and documented Callies against BTB in Edmonton earlier this season and Callies were decent for roughly 70 minutes and even held the lead. We have already seen that they are capable of competing with this team. The minimum standard has to be that teams arrive prepared and willing to compete, regardless of the circumstances surrounding the fixture if this is a competition we want to see grow.

I’d genuinely welcome someone from Callies providing some context for what happened tonight because from the outside looking in that first half was extremely disappointing.
