Just helped a family member move from Florida to Cali. Here are some stats I hope will help others.
-Movers quoted $6000 to $8000 for the move and I thought I could do it cheaper. I was wrong. All in (truck, hotels, meals, gas, flights) I was in it for $6600. Insurance was just over $800 of that total but I accepted it because my car insurance wouldn’t cover the truck.
-I rented a 16 foot Penske truck because they are supposed to be newer. Mine had 137,xxx miles, front end damage that made it pull to the right and a vibration so bad I couldn’t go over 65 mph. I asked for a different truck and was told none available.
-We did the drive in 2 vehicles (truck and private car). We traveled 2501 miles in 4 days. $969 dollars in gas and averaged 11.01 mpg. Shortest day was 8.5 hours and the longest 14 hours. Weather was good most of the way but I did get to experience 2 dust storms at the New Mexico/Arizona border with massive wind and pouring monsoon rain thrown in. Not fun!

Extremely Disappointing Experience – Would Not Recommend
USDOT# 3341650 MC# 01066696 Our family recently used AmeriSafe Van Lines for a cross-country move from Oklahoma to Washington, and the experience was one of the most stressful consumer experiences we've ever had. Our initial quote was approximately $15,000, based on a detailed inventory call that lasted over an hour, during which we were repeatedly assured the estimate was intentionally overestimated so we would not encounter unexpected charges. Instead, our final bill exceeded $33,000, more than double the original estimate.
Throughout the sales and planning process, we were assured multiple times that our shipment would receive "VIP treatment," remain on dedicated trucks, be handled by the same team, and would not be mixed with other customers' belongings. After pickup, we discovered our household goods had been transferred between trucks, and members of the delivery crew later indicated that our belongings had been transported alongside another household's shipment.
Communication was also inconsistent and frustrating. We received conflicting information from different representatives regarding scheduling, delivery timelines, truck assignments, payment requirements, and shipment status. Multiple promised callbacks never occurred, and obtaining updates often required us to repeatedly contact the company ourselves.
The packing and loading process raised additional concerns. Items were repeatedly left behind despite walkthroughs and instructions that everything in the home was to be moved. No comprehensive inventory was created during loading, and we had to remind the crew several times about obvious items that had been missed.
Upon delivery, we found damaged items, improperly wrapped furniture and mattresses, partially assembled belongings, spilled detergent inside packed items, and other evidence of poor handling. The weight tickets and truck information also appeared inconsistent with what we had previously been told about our shipment.
Moving is already stressful, especially with a growing family. We selected AmeriSafe because we believed their assurances of professionalism, transparency, and accurate estimating. Unfortunately, our experience fell far short of those promises.
Based on our experience, I would strongly encourage anyone considering AmeriSafe Van Lines to obtain multiple estimates, ask detailed questions in writing, and carefully review all contract terms before committing.
They have great movers. I’m talking about what I can bring or get to help with that day and the first few days.
Yes I will run this by my daughter but what am I forgetting? They are just moving across town but they have a one year old and mom is 4 months pregnant.
