"compressing" an o-ring in an assembly

I'm designing a watch case and caseback (cover) which has an o-ring in-between. I was wondering if nx has the ability to show an o-ring in it's natural state when the components are unassembled/unmated and compressed/deformed when it's assembled/mated?

STL's & Facet Bodies vs Convergent Bodies vs Unparameterized Step Bodies

https://preview.redd.it/mlsuxuybabbh1.png?width=1909&format=png&auto=webp&s=723bd4f16c2fd676de9b0b9612bb00bf45dad5a3

I'd consider myself an intermediate NX user but I'm pretty lost on the difference between STL imports vs STEP imports. When importing an STL into an active prt file, typically my goal is to change parameters, but with the student edition of NX, you have to pick whether you want a facet body or a convergent body and neither seems to work the way I want. At least with convergent bodies you can extract (i think) an unparameterized solid body of your stl. But there are still some issues with doing things like extracting exact geometry from this body. Whats the difference in a convergent body, and a step file body? I'm pretty sure they're both just unparameterized. My question i suppose is how does NX intend for you to go about extracting geometry from non part files. thx

Free and open source alternative to NX

In the last 15 years I have being designing products on software like Inventor, SolidWorks and Fusion, never had the opportunity to use NX but looks quite similar based on friends testimonial.

One thing that always bothered me was the lack of first class support to other operating systems than Windows.

FreeCAD is a great product but is not intuitive for anyone coming from SolidWorks/Inventor/NX.

So I decided to change that, I am developing Oblikovati, an open source, multi platform ( runs and builds for Linux Wayland, Mac Universal and Windows) Parametric B-Rep CAD which is super lightweight.

Oblikovati is developed from the ground up, not a wrapper around OpenCascade, using GoLang and modern Vulkan API.

It opens in a second. You can using any mid tier hardware and it runs smoothly.

I have development builds ready to run for all OSes on GitHub: https://github.com/Oblikovati/Oblikovati

The features I expect to ship for a first stable release are already there including:

- Parameters & Complete Parameters Solver.

- Sketch 2D and 3D with complete Constraints Solver.

- Part Modelling including Sheet Metal support.

- Drawings & Annotations.

- Basic Assembly with Joints & Constraints + Assembly Parameters Linking.

- Imports: DXF, DWG, PDF Vectors, Obj, Stl, STEP, Various Point Cloud Files.

- Exports: DXF, STEP, STL, 3MF, OBJ.

Some niceties are: Complete UI color customisation with dark and light themes and Text format documents, so your designs are git friendly and easy to track design changes.

I am happy to receive bug reports, feature requests and any feedback helping to bring the software faster to a stable release 1.

How can one show datum in arrows like the 1st pic.??
was finally able to show datum in drafting using refernce sets but as soon as i hit print the X Y Z is gone only 2 arrows are left how to show all ?
also how to get the COG symbol it appears fine in modeling but appears as a "+" when drafted.
pic1. Got as Reference
pic2. my drafting can see x y
pic 3. my drafting printed now X and Y is gone

Need your help

Hi Community,

I'm currently trying to create a parts list, but I'm running into a problem: in the Assembly Navigator, I only see drafting components instead of the actual parts, and I can't select them.

When I try to select them, I keep getting the same error message: "Drafting components are not allowed in parts lists."

I've attached a screenshot for clarification.

Could someone please help me convert the drafting components in the Assembly Navigator into the actual parts, so I can add them to my parts list?

Thank you in advance!

What’s the most annoying Siemens NX problem that stole your afternoon?

I’m curious what Siemens NX problems have wasted the most time for people.
What was the last modelling, sketch, feature-tree, assembly, or meshing issue that made you question your life choices for 1–2+ hours?

Stuff like:
- vague error messages
- features randomly failing
- broken references
sketches refusing to behave
extrudes doing weird things
assembly constraints fighting back
debugging the completely wrong thing
What was the problem, and how did you eventually fix it?

Advice for Beginners in NX

Hey everyone I am a mechanical undergrad. Recently I wanted to be enrolled myself in an ansys program in an institution in my home town but since they have resources regarding apdl not workbench they suggested that I should go for the combine cad+cam program in Siemens NX. For starters i have intermediate knowledge in solidworks, worked on fsae vehicle competition for college clubs, and made few personal projects. I want to build a product Design engineer career in the big tech in future. I want to ask if NX is worth it big 2026?

How to create this kind of curved vanish edge?

Saw this on social media, and pretty curious about how to build this in Fusion, especially the curved vanish edges at the knob to the top surface.

The connection between the knob and the side rim also has a vanish edge, but I assume that can be built with split faces and loft?

Thanks.

Is there a way to count holes in NX on a model?

Our company is switching from Catia to NX. I work in automotive and we have parts with over 100 holes. We need to validate the number of holes occasionally using the model. Is there a way for NX to cound all enclosed holes in a part model?

CAD Laptop Mechanical Engineering Student (Thinkpad P1 Gen 8)

Hello guys,

As a mechanical engineering student who has worked in development departments before, I know CAD quite well and manage larger assemblies. Would you say the following ThinkPad P1 Gen 8 configuration is fine for me?

My budget is around 3,000 CHF—if it's premium and reliable, I am willing to pay a bit more, but my budget has a hard ceiling. Pricing here in Switzerland is tough compared to the US, and going with an older generation (Gen 7) isn't a big price difference, which is why I'm looking at the newest model.

The Specs:

  • CPU: Intel Core Ultra 7 255H
  • GPU: NVIDIA RTX PRO 2000 Blackwell (8GB GDDR7)
  • RAM: 32 GB LPDDR5X (CAMM2)
  • Storage: 1 TB PCIe Gen5 SSD
  • Display: 16" 3.2K OLED Touch
  • Current price : 2771.24 CHF (swiss francs)

The price includes my Lenovo education discount and 3-year Premier warranty.

My concern: I saw a review for a similar model claiming that 32 GB RAM repeatedly triggers low-memory warnings in SolidWorks.

Normally I'd just configure it with 64 GB, but Lenovo charges around 1,000 CHF more for the 64 GB upgrade here, which is way too expensive for my budget. Plus, since this uses the new CAMM2 memory standard, upgrading it myself later seems incredibly expensive and difficult to source.

My questions for heavy CAD users:

  1. Is 32 GB actually a hard bottleneck for large assemblies on this chassis, or is that review an outlier? (i mean i have worked with dell precisions with 32gb Ram and that seemed to work)
  2. If 64 GB is truly mandatory for my use case, am I looking at the wrong laptop? Is there a better workstation in this price bracket I should consider instead?

Appreciate the time and responses!

Need help with License file for DesignCenter 2606 (NX latest version)

So recently I have installed the latest NX version 2606 and unable to find the license file at the Siemens support center. For other version till 2512, I used to download it from my license page at Siemens website. Is anything related to licenses changed from this version. Any leads on this would be helpful.

Built a Fusion 360 prototype called SurfPick and would love feedback from CAD/CAM users.

The idea came from working with imported STEP models where feature history is unavailable. In these models, selecting all faces belonging to a hole, pocket, slot, or protrusion often requires a lot of manual clicking.

SurfPick attempts to solve that problem by:

• Analyzing model topology using AI-assisted feature recognition
• Identifying feature groups from imported geometry
• Allowing users to select a single face and automatically highlight related faces belonging to the same feature
• Supporting bulk feature highlighting across the model

Current prototype supports:

• Open Features
• Closed Features
• Protrusions
• Unknown Features

Future roadmap:

• Holes
• Closed Pockets
• Open Pockets
• Individual Faces
• Additional manufacturing features

Demo video attached.

I'd really appreciate feedback from CAM programmers, CNC programmers, manufacturing engineers, and Fusion 360 users:

  1. Would a tool like this save time in your workflow?
  2. What would prevent you from using a tool like this?

Looking for honest feedback — including reasons why this may not be useful.

Need help by the Assembly, CSYS to CSYS

https://preview.redd.it/tytk66fwzv8h1.png?width=1875&format=png&auto=webp&s=42fd3481e65bb19bcb6ab64374c64dd9747fd3cb

Hi everyone,
I am having issues with the orientation of my assembly. When I move to the drawing, because of the weird angle, whole thing looks wrong. How can I fix this the easiest way? I have been trying to use 'move component-csys to csys' but I don't really know what I am doing or what I should klick.

Thanks for the help!

(And I should have just downloaded English version. It not helping me learning the language.)
