Screenwriting groups in NYC?

Hi all, I'm 30 years old and after years of writing first drafts of random short film ideas I have, I'd like to finally complete a script of a short film (or films!) that I can shoot. I am hoping to find a screenwriting group or course in NYC that can help me stay on track + workshop my ideas and give feedback. I've been looking at Gotham Writers classes but less than a class that teaches me how to write screenplays (which I already have a foundational understanding of), I'm more interested in a group that can workshop with each other and keep each other accountable along the journey. however, i do want it to be a formal group that meets either weekly or every other week. would love any advice. thank you!

short film link

Hey! I'm trying to seek more opinions, views and engagement on a friend's original short film

Link is given above!

Why posting it here?

Cuz the story/script has been written by the same guy who has also acted, directed, edited and everything in between- in this short film! (one man army lol)

Background- This guy is a proper cinephile (a close friend of mine), grew up watching movies alone in the theatres, saving money to buy tickets, sneaking and bunking classes to watch his favourite films. He taught himself everything about cinematography and filmmaking from scratch- in short a very passionate and hardworking individual.

- he has worked previously in various metropolitan cities, now trying to make something of his own!

Motive to post it here-

I'm not just seeking engagement on his channel, but also genuine reviews and comments, criticism and constructive criticism alike.

Feel free to drop your opinion!

comment in case you want to connect with him on instagram.

I shot a solo coffee spec ad with a minimal setup. Would love some cinematography feedback!

Heyaaa!!

I’m an India-based filmmaker, and I created a solo spec commercial for Blue Tokai coffee. Since I was working all alone, I ended up wearing all the hats—writing, lighting, shooting, editing, and even acting in it myself.

Given my limited resources, my main goal was to see how much production value and mood I could squeeze out of a very small setup. I really tried to focus on intentional framing, cinematic lighting, and visual storytelling to set the right atmosphere.

Here is a quick look at the tools I used to bring it together:

The Gear:

Nikon Z6III paired with a 28-75mm f/2.8 lens.

Kept the lighting simple with a Godox SL60W and a tiny Hiffin 7W.

The Look (Post-Production):

Cut and finished entirely in DaVinci Resolve.

Used Dehancer for the color grade, aiming for a cinematic feel with a Fujifilm 3513 emulation.

I’m really looking to grow as a visual storyteller, so I would genuinely love to hear your thoughts. Whether it’s about the lighting choices, the pacing, or the overall vibe—please don't hold back on the constructive criticism!

(I've also attached a few of my favorite stills above so you can see the framing!)

ps- This isn't my work. I posted this on behalf of u/date_007. He's new to reddit, doesn't have enough karma and still finding his way through this app (I mean- reddit can be intimidating for beginners- there's just so much going on hehe). So I figured that I'd post for him :). Happy watching!

How to avoid using AI on writing?

I want to use zero AI on screenplay writing. However whenever I try, I end up translating my mother tonque to english with AI or google translator, since I don't know how to praise certain phrases into english. What do I do?

NYC / TriState Sound stages

Hey filmmakers. Looking for soundstages in the NYC/TriState area to shoot a pilot on. I know the usual suspects - Silvercup, Kaufman Astoria, Borden, Wildflower, etc. does anyone have experience with any others that they can recommend? Budget friendly would be helpful as well.

Appreciate you all. Thanks.

Film work (Camera, G&E)

Hey All.

I’m new to New York and I work in film. After being on a few sets and meeting tons of fellow crew who also live in Bushwick, I figured this would be a decent place to say hello as I try to build my network.

If you know (or are one) any key grips, gaffers, or DPs looking for hands, please consider giving me a shout. I’ve been doing some work as a swing grip, BBG, and PA. Here’s my website: loganstrykermedia.myportfolio.com

Thanks for reading and have a great day!

where y’all at?

hello fellow nyc filmmakers , how are you doin?

I’m curious if you had any advice on the best places to meet other filmmakers in the city? I’m looking for friends to collaborate with , help on their films and get help on my own.

i’m an 28yo Australian, director and producer. Spent the last eight years working professionally with TV and film projects across Netflix, Prime, Stan (aussie streamer) and indie films. Now freelance producing commercials in the city.

Commercials good, but it’s been hard finding my people to collaborate on shorts and sketches etc. I’ve done some networking events which was so-so but had some recommendations to hit Metrograph events and hang around after. Any thing else jump to mind ? Would be very appreciative.

This a team sport !
Thanks ! Ax

Movie Theater Rental for Private Party in NYC?

Seen a few threads about this but they’re all 3y old!! Looking to rent a theater for 25-50 people for a private party! Screen would be used for slideshows and music videos.

Commercial theaters like AMC can be rented but only show their own movies, I don’t really want to watch a movie just rent the theater space and use the projector.

Comment with leads!
