Your trade-in: some common sense ('cause I almost let the details slide myself)

  1. Send in your trade-in at your very first opportunity. Phobio uses their own receiving date for the deadline-- not when you hand it over to UPS! If you don't need to (or can avoid) transferring your data, etc. don't procrastinate. In my case I'm not waiting for the Razr Fold to arrive. I saved many of the app settings to the cloud and my home computer. If your return deadline is looking tight because your estimated Razr Fold delivery is further off than looks comfortable: give up the luxury of waiting for the Fold.
  2. Check the insert in the trade-in package and get the QR code. Follow the packing instructions. (Yeah, common sense.)
  3. Photograph their UPS return label!
  4. Put the tracking number for this return package into the app at UPS. (If you haven't already done so, you might want to set up a free UPS login with notification instructions. There is also a UPS app from which you can also access that login.) And then watch to assure that you can sigh in relief that it arrives at Phobio's location in time.

I wish I had all the above advice in the past. Phobio can be fair but they are really, really strict (and one-sided) about timing the deadline to their convenience and not yours.

Phone still hasn't shipped

I preordered the fold and it's Friday morning now and no updates. Starting to get pretty frustrated, anyone else still waiting for a tracking number?

Tracking numbers (for Razr Fold pre-orders) are sprouting like wildflowers

When I looked just now at my order after logging in, a UPS tracking number appeared. Unfortunately the number is not yet in the UPS database. Maybe later today?

Go ahead and join the fun. Do you have your tracking number yet? Did it connect to UPS's system status yet? If yes, got an estimated delivery date?

Best Buy unboxed a Razr Fold for me and handed it to me to try out.

I had to be in the neighborhood of the Best Buy store closest to corporate HQ. The phone guy told me that the phone was not on display. Truth be told: he had no idea about the phone at all. He figured it was another Razr flip phone. Doing my best to be charming (and not a Karen), I asked whether I could ask the store manager to unbox one if they had it in stock-- that they could then use that one as the display model. The store manager had the section manager fulfill my request. With no issues. (As an ex-New Yorker I am always surprised when I don't get resistance at retail. But there really is Minnesota Nice.)

A couple of the phone people stayed with me-- not 'cause they figured I'd run out of the store-- but because they wanted to see the Razr Fold too.

I previously owned:

  • a Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3
  • and then a OnePlus Open

Here's my take:

There are reviewers who make a big deal that the Fold is a whole honking 28 grams heavier (that's a frightening 1 ounce for us Yanks) than the Z Fold 7. And most reviewers also immediately go into crease gazing. (I'm surprised they don't use micrometers.) As a veteran fold user from two other vendors, I was not at all put off by that weighty one ounce. And more remarkably, straight out of the box there was no noticeable crease. And I tried a few angles under the glorious Best Buy flourescents. Frankly, I had two folding models with modest crevasses in the past and even after a few years of use, that never bothered me. If you are a crease fetishist: you should expect that a gradual crease will form on this model too. But this one starts out with a clean bill of flatness where those other two did not. Moving on to it's svelte profile: it is delightfully slim. A micrometer really won't matter if it's a silly millimeter away from the Z Fold 7 or Find N6. At least not to me.

The screen is as bright as they all say. And it's sharp. The speakers are just OK. A little on the tinny side. Heck-- how can you expect more than that when the drivers are little more than aluminum foil. (That's humor and not a specification.)

At first blush, the UI is pretty much what Motorola delivers on the entire fleet. But I encourage you to look at YouTube demonstrations of the various screen splitting modes and especially what the reviewers call multitasking (and I call windowing). While talking about displaying, I tried out Motorola's Smart Connect app on Windows a couple weeks ago using my humble Moto G Stylus 2024. It's pretty nifty. (Check out Shane Craig's video demonstrating it on YouTube. And then stay for his other stuff.)

I think you know if you got to this paragraph that I am not thinking of canceling my pre-order. I only wish Best Buy could have matched Motorola's bundle and trade-in incentives. I would have sped home with the black box in my hand while the other one was on the steering wheel. So am I still eagerly awaiting a tracking number? What do you think?

Razr Fold: let's discover cases

With a new phone model, the next step is finding the right case. When it's a niche model like the Razr Fold, the pickings may be a lot slimmer than for a more mass market phone. Right now, this is all I can find (speaking of slim):

https://thinborne.com/collections/motorola-razr-fold-case

It's pricey! I like that it's got Magsafe built in. But no "garage" for the stylus.

Let's build this thread as we discover cases. Please add comments about their respective features. (And links to manufacturer and sellers.)

Shipping status on Razr Fold pre-orders is still a black box

By "black box" I mean that a system process has a step and what happens inside that step is opaque-- unaccessible-- to anyone outside the process.

I called order management at Motorola. +1 (866) 282-7387

I asked about the general situation and offered them my order number. I'm sorry to stay that I learned nothing enlightening about what to expect for delivery dates. I did ask the rep to put a note in the system suggesting that it would be very helpful to all of us who pre-ordered: start generating shipping labels so that we all have tracking numbers. The rep agreed to enter that note. It's anyone's guess whether that will make a difference. But I figure the company will take notice if everyone starts calling the company and asking for the shipping status for their phones. Maybe that will make things move?

Feel free to post whether you made that call and whether it yields any more info.

Overlapping groups for Motorola Razr Fold

I see so many overlapping posts for those of us discussing the Motorola Razr Fold in the following groups:

  • r/razr
  • r/motorola
  • r/razrfold
  • r/MotorolaFold
  • r/motorolarazrfold

Is there a way to consolidate and/or agree on the primary group for this device?
