Step 1: I had been warming up his account since 3 months. Was dropping comments and occasional posts after the first month and after there was enough Karma.

Step 2: I identified 8-10 subs where his ICP was hanging out. Dropping comments on relevant posts was the only thing I did in the first month.

Step 3: After the first month, I started posting one those identified subs. One post a week. I never talked about the newsletter or the solution. Just talking about problems, self-experience and advices.

There was no mention of the newsletter anywhere in the posts although it was mentioned in the bio of the account being used.

We started seeing a small trickle of signups through that. Wasn’t much but 1-2 signups in a day.

Step 4: I slowly ramped up the posts. Most of them had no mention of the newsletter but I was occasionally dropping the name in the comments.

Links are a big no in most of the subreddits.

In the last 4 months of me promoting the newsletter, I might have put in the link to the newsletter directly just 4-5 times. That’s it.

Direct links will get you banned, posts will be removed, mods will mute you.

Step 5: I built a subreddit of my own. This is like the literal hack for marketing on Reddit. You can post whatever you want, any links anything.

But the issue is if you want to see users, you need to populate it too.

I asked frequent posters in other relevant subs to post in there too. Most of them didn’t even reply but a few did and I gave them liberty of posting whatever they wanted.

Then last week, I made a post describing how the newsletter was working and how it made money. The owner already had a lead magnet and it was promoted inside the post.

In just 3 days, it helped gaining 800+ subs on the main newsletter and 200+ on the secondary.

The posts are still sending subs two weeks after. It has almost now crossed 950+ subs.

And as long as it stays up, it will act as a constant lead sender lol.

A few bonus points:

• There’s a trends section on your reddit profile where you can create your keywords. Create your niche related keywords and you can keep a look out for latest posts in that niche. Very helpful.

• This works for every kind of business out there, just need to tweak a few details.

• There’s a thing called user flair and you can set that up for every sub you are in. Most people don’t even know what that is but that user flair is more powerful than anything else, it instantly makes you stand out and builds your authority.

Marketing on Reddit is tricky.

No amount of being sly will save you from bashing from the users here who hate to be sold to.

The only solution is to not sell.

Yeah, you’re hearing that right.

Never ever directly sell your stuff on Reddit.

Instead solve people’s problems. If your product solves some problem, find people who have that problem and just let them know that your product solves.

Be as genuine as possible. Nobody likes a “know it all”

Here are some practical tips that you can implement today:

1. Never promote directly and put in links. You’ll get banned definitely.
2. Identify 4-5 subs related to your niche and become a regular poster in those subs.
3. Comments are more powerful than posts.
4. Don’t use ai to write

It feels like Reddit is still a niche service compared to SEO or PPC, so I've always wondered whether people are actively looking for Reddit marketers or if most of you are finding clients elsewhere and introducing Reddit as a solution later.
