This is why I’ll vote no on any new taxes in San Leandro

Our city leaders are not serious people. They are not good stewards of our money. They are not able to run a functioning city. What is our current tally of payouts and legal fees due to incompetent elected and appointed officials over the last 5-6 years? It’s got to be in the $5-6m range?

I know our roads are shot and other infrastructure needs investment, but I won’t support any taxes until we have a new council, mayor etc. I simply don’t trust these people.

From today’s East Bay Insiders newsletter:

CITY NEWS
SAN LEANDRO
**—‘DRO, P.I.—**For independent investigation firms, San Leandro politics continues to be good for business.
—The San Leandro City Council on Monday approved a third contract amendment adding $150,000 to its agreement with Chaplin & Hill Investigative Services, bringing the firm’s total compensation to $400,000 through June 2028.
—The city has relied heavily on outside investigators over the past two years amid a series of workplace complaints, including allegations made by former City Manager Fran Robustelli and Councilmember Xouhoa Bowen involving members of the City Council.
—The latest contract increase is believed to be tied, at least in part, to the city’s ongoing investigation into Police Chief Angela Avierett, who was placed on paid administrative leave last month.
—The Alameda County District Attorney’s Office has since charged Avierett with misdemeanor hit-and-run stemming from the May 2025 incident on Interstate 580.”

2026 Cherry Festival parade

Another one for the books. One of the longest in my recollection!

Hats off to council women Bowen and BART D4 Raburn for walking/biking the course and reaching out to their constituents. The rest were safely enclosed in steel box while waving to their peons.

Wonderful to see kids enjoying route and all the performance troupe. Big props for the purple dance group continuing to perform as the congestion slowed parade to a standstill … likely because of the car traffic.

Maybe next year we stop the irony of closing a street once a year to only having a parade of cars.

Is the road on Lake Chabot permanently closed to cars and if so why?

I notice its been like that for a while now. It looks like they just want bikers or pedestrians. I don't know if they're remodeling or its designed like that now.

Powerlifting gyms

Hello I’ll be moving to San Leandro soon and was wondering if there are any gyms here that offer plenty of free weights that aren’t just 24 fitness or anytime? From previous experience those tend to be packed after hours!

Thank you

San Leandro Butterfly garden monthly workday

If you like gardening or butterflies go help out. I just enjoy the butterflies. It seemed like they had vanished for a little while there.

More drama sucking up governing time on our council

I feel bad for CM Bowen, and Aguilar seems super toxic and needs to go, but again, why is our council stuck navigating all of this interpersonal drama when we have so many problems in our city? I’m so fed up. It’s like The Real Housewives of Alameda County politics at this point.

Edit: it may have been hard to find the SL content buried in this article so removing link and replacing with quote from East Bay Insiders newsletter from today:

“LAST WORD—San Leandro Councilmember Xouhoa Bowen spoke publicly for the first time Monday since learning that the Central Valley official who sexually battered her at a 2024 conference agreed to enter a first-time offender diversion program in a Tampa, Fla., court.
—“What I learned through this experience is the violation itself is often only the beginning,” Bowen said in prepared remarks delivered at the conclusion of Monday night’s City Council meeting.
—“What follows can be disbelief. It can be rumor. It can be character assassination. It can be people searching for reasons why what happened really wasn’t that bad or why the person who was harmed somehow bears responsibility for the harm done to them,” she said.
—Daniel Parra, a Fowler city councilmember, kissed Bowen following events at the National League of Cities conference in November 2024. Surveillance video captured the incident, according to a police report.
—Florida prosecutors—not Bowen—filed a sexual battery charge against Parra. A trial was scheduled to begin last week but was canceled after Parra agreed to a diversion program that includes mandatory consent training and community service.
—Bowen also sharply criticized fellow San Leandro Councilmember Victor Aguilar Jr. He attended Monday’s meeting remotely and did not comment.
—“The fact that these rumors were being spread even before the assault occurred is deeply troubling,” Bowen said, referring to anonymous emails sent to a San Leandro resident and allegations later repeated by Aguilar, Jr. to an independent investigator hired by the city.
—According to the investigator’s report, Aguilar claimed Bowen was drinking during the city-funded trip, repeatedly asked Parra to dance, and that the incident “goes both ways.” Bowen called those assertions “categorically false.”
—“I did not initiate or encourage physical contact. I never even had a drink in my hand,” she said. “Consent is not complicated and accountability should not be conditional.”
—Bowen said efforts to blame victims contribute to a “culture of silence” that protects predators from accountability.
—“This is how predators are protected,” Bowen said. “We have had very high profile predators that we are still questioning how they were able to do the things that they were able to do.”

East Bay viewing

I called Harry’s Hofbrau in San Leandro around 6pm to confirm they could play the game. The staff person put me on hold and asked the manager. They confirmed that they could turn it on tonight. We came right at 7pm and with a little patience, they got the game on. Delicious food for our crew : Cesar salad, chicken pot pie, beef stew, mashed potatoes and chocolate cream pie with beer and soda. Several other fans there in their lavender gear and plenty of space to eat, drink, talk and cheer. I’m hoping it can become another official affiliate bar/restaurant. Thanks for the good times Valkyries and Harry’s 💜✨

Downtown San Leandro

Is it me or has downtown gotten worse, safety wise? I've been living in downtown for a few years now and don't remember ever being this bad when growing up. I'm seeing more cars getting broken into, packages in my apartment building are getting stolen by nearby neighbors, altercations in washington plaza, and wreckless drivers. My car got totaled last year by someone who ran a red light on davis, by ihop and they tried driving away, luckily there was a cop at that intersection watching and stopped them. I also walk my dog everyday in downtown and notice more and more about downtown that isn't right, fearing for my safety now every time I'm out. I also cannot tell you how many times my dog and I almost have been hit by cars when we have had the right of way to walk across the street too 😭 How does everyone else feel?
