The Vlorë 1997 Starter Pack

Made this for anyone who wasn't around or who only knows 1997 as "that year Albania went feral."

Quick recap for the uninitiated: after communism fell, Albania had basically no functioning banking sector, so half the country parked its life savings into "investment firms" - VEFA, Gjallica, Xhaferri, Populli, and of course Sudja. Classic pyramid structure. Early investors got paid with late investors' money, everyone assumed they were geniuses, and people were selling apartments and livestock to buy in. At peak absurdity the schemes were holding value equal to a huge chunk of national GDP.

Then, predictably, the music stopped in early 1997.

Vlorë went first, because Vlorë always goes first. Protests, then armory raids, then something like half a million weapons in civilian hands within weeks. The state basically evaporated south of the Shkumbin. Around 2,000 people died.
