Tips to avoid sketchy volunteer opportunities?

I'm very new to this and travelling in general, but I am simultaneously looking forward to it!

Do any experienced folks have any advice for me? I've seen a few posts on here where people have been scammed, and would prefer to be as safe as possible.

Thank you!

Isn’t volunteering on a tourist visa illegal in most countries?

According to the law in 99% of countries, volunteering in exchange for accommodation and/or food (especially when it’s for a for-profit business) counts as work. Even working remotely for a foreign company counts as work. Work is almost always illegal on tourist visas.

Volunteer with no English skills

I'm thinking of volunteering through Workaway. I'm Spanish and my English isn't good enough to feel comfortable speaking it, but I'd still like feedback on your experiences and if you'd encourage me to do it.

Also, I'd like to ask about countries you'd recommend for this!
