WAT student here: university refused leave, employer rejected due to late start — what are my options?

My university refused to approve leave/deferred exams for my WAT program, so the earliest date I can arrive in the US is July 22. Because of this, my host employer rejected my placement due to the late start date.

I already passed the employer interview and completed most of the process, so this is really frustrating 😭

I’m under CIEE sponsorship. Is there still any way for me to continue participating in the program? Has anyone experienced something similar before?

Also, is it possible to find a new host employer by myself (self-placement) for late July arrival? Any advice or experience would really help. Thank you!

How to track your earning at Work and Travel?

Last summer I did Work & Travel in the US.

2 jobs. Different hourly rates depending on the shift. Some days tips were amazing, some days dead. Rent, Ubers, groceries, random late-night food runs… money was disappearing fast.

I was tracking everything in a small notebook.

After every shift I’d write down my hours manually. Then calculate my expected paycheck myself. I even kept crumpled grocery store receipts in my wallet because I was scared of losing track of spending.

At the time I felt organized.

But when I came back home and tried to figure out how much I actually made that summer… I realized I had no idea.

Just random notes, receipts, screenshots, and a rough estimate in my head.

So I built an app for it.

EarnTab lets J1 students track shifts, hours, overtime, tips, expenses, and savings in one place. You can add multiple jobs with different pay rates and actually see where your money is going week by week.

Honestly, I mainly built it because I wish I had it during my own summer.

If anyone here is doing J1 / Work & Travel this year, I’d genuinely love feedback from people who are actually living that experience.

If anyone here is doing J1 this summer and wants to try it, here’s the link:

looking for local advice

hello! im doing a work and travel program this upcoming winter (dec to march) in juneau. so im kinda worried about this topics:
- is the job market open? i want to get a second job there (specially as a server or in a restaurant/bar) bc its very important for me to get back my investment (around 3.5k)
- is the city accessible via bus or public transport? i dont have a car so if i want to go for example to downtown Juneau, is that something i can do easily?
- is shipping there higher? like if a want to order products from the apple store, best buy or places like that. can i find it easily in town or i have to necessarily ship it there?
- is it worth it if its my first time traveling to the us? if im hired i will be workign at a ski area (i dont want to disclose it bc idk if that legal) and they will be providing me housing in one the university dorms close to workplace.

Gaaaanz liebe Grüße:)
