Day/overnight trip to the highlands with a sedan?

Day/overnight trip to the highlands with a sedan?

Hello. Were visiting Iceland in early September to do the ring road in 10 days, but was thinking about doing at least 1 day/overnight trip to the highlands and to see what is recommended? We are tenting the whole trip.

The plan is to keep costs down, so we were gonna rent a FWD sedan or at best an SUV Still 2WD, since from what I understand I wont need a 4x4 for doing the ring road. To get to the highlands I need to drive on a "f road" as they seem to be called, but I know there's a big difference in roads. Are there any trips that we can do in a FWD into the highlands (no river crossings)? I need to ask specifically because there's lots of people out there who think a 4x4 is needed for any sort of gravel road.

For context, we are from BC, Canada and here we are used to doing 5+ hour drives into the mountains on beat up logging roads. I have Honda Civic and a road like this (which I just drove this weekend) we still do in a FWD sedan. So with that said, are there some interesting places I can get to in the highlands without springing for a 4x4 rental?

West End Legacy Parking Permits quietly phasing out?

It's May, so the west end parking permits are about to expire and I'm renewing mine again. I've lived here for 10+ years and am on the legacy market rate. Below is a list of how much the Legacy permit cost me each year since it was implemented.

May 2026 - $210.00
May 9 2025 - $151.83
May 27 2024 - $132.03
May 10 2023 - $110.03
May 28 2022 - $100.02
May 14 2021 - $90.93
May 18 2020 - $82.67
May 20 2019 - $81.05
May 07 2018 - $79.45

I don't have the "market rate" for each year, but this is the first and last.

May 2026 - $497.93
May 2018 - $360

Apparently inflation has been 24.0% to 31.4% since 2018 but these are the increase % since that time:

Market rate has increased 38.31%
Legacy Rate has increased 164.32%

Aside from the market rate which should be slightly lower, the Legacy rate has some astronomical price increases and it looks like the city is just quietly phasing it out so nobody complains?
