What to do after Bas-Lag?

Hi all, I read China Mieville’s Bas-Lag series a couple of years ago and enjoyed it a lot, although his characters often felt a little cardboardy— you can tell he used to be a D&D guy

I’ve found myself thinking a lot lately about how much I enjoyed those books, and I’d love to read something that imaginative and pulpy/plotty in an urban fantasy setting. My only problem is that most recent fantasy looks crap! Does anyone have any recommendations? I was thinking Dhalgren might be the one for me but I’m a little hesitant to commit to the full 950 pages of it without further encouragement ha
