How much should I ask?
Hey everyone!
I'm in the lucky position of having been offered a chance to join a research team as a postdoc in Canada. I'm not familiar with Canadian academia, or how exactly funding works. The professor who made the offer asked me to come back with how much I'm asking for, so that they can make the budget. And to be honest... I don't really know.
From what I've seen, most postdocs seem to be between 45K - 70K dollars a year. The professor told me that I could also pick up a few teaching positions to supplement the postdoc salary.
One thing I'm also wondering is how much of that postdoc funding is then cut by taxes etc?
I have a few years of professional (non-academia) experience, and I know cost of living is quite high in Canada so I don't want to sell myself short, but I'm also hesitant to ask for too much, since I'm very excited about this opportunity.
How much would you advise me to ask?
