new to this hobby and looking to learn.

how do you go about determining rock hardness? i screwed up batch 1.0 partially due to impatience (too short a run in stage 1) and partially because (i'm guessing) of mixed hardnesses in the batch.

looking online, i see multiple ways of determining hardness, from "scratch it with a nail" to actual dedicated tools that look like ninja stars. are the tools the way to go?
