Got my first IT job as a support technician 2 months ago and I hate it so much

I work for a small ISP. I dread going to work everday and I regret leaving my previous insurance job (actually paid 20% more than my current job).

You have to multitask like crazy.

  • Attend to tickets
  • Dispatch fibre repair teams when necessary and you have to track their location throughout the entire day. They use telegram so you have to constantly look at your telegram to know where they are. Also as soon as a team repairs something, they post pictures in the chat but it gets lost and mixed up with other messages. So you have to go looking for it and find out which pictures is for which customer and update the notes on system
  • Configure routers and test devices (Fun but it's the same configuration settings all the time)
  • There is a lot of paper works as well, which is so flippin annoying and pointless because everything is recorded on the system!
  • You have to do all of the above while taking calls. This is what I hate the most. In addition to this, I worked in customer care before and I can tell you that ISP customers are a different beast.
  • Go on site(now and then). This is the most fun part of the job but your tickets are waiting for you when you're back. While on site you also have to take like a thousand pictures of everything you do.
  • You can't leave the office until all fibre repair teams are back and all tickets are replied to, irrespective of when the customer responded. I rarely leave on the clock off time stipulated in my contract

I wish this company would fire me. I feel so incompetent and pressurized. I thought of asking for my previous job but I need this IT experience. I left my previous company immediately and if they took me back I would be grateful but also very embarrassed.

I got my A+ and I'm currently studying for an IT diploma part time. It's really hard to study on my off days because I just want to numb my brain with dopamine and forget about work.

The truth is, I'm incompetent because there are people there doing the job just fine. However with me, I can work hard and I learn at a decent pace but I can only multitask up to a limit.

I just wish I had a helpdesk job where I can just take phone calls and answer tickets.

I guess this is just a season in life that I have to go through.

First year IT student. Is it normal to have quizzes with pseudo code all tightly packed into one paragraph?

I'm thinking of emailing a complaint to my University because this lecturer (for a beginner programming module) formats pseudo code really badly. This module doesn't use any specific programming language syntax. It's all flowcharts and pseudo code. Here are some examples:

  • How many lines of output will be displayed when the following code is executed? display “Hello” for x = 1 to 4 display “Outer loop”, x for y = 1 to 6 step 2 if y > x then display “Inner loop”, y endif next y next x display “end”
  • How many times would “Programming is fun” be displayed when the following is executed? ProgrammingIsFun x = 2 y = 3 do x = x + 1 do while y <=5 display “Programming is Fun” y = y + 2 loop display “Programming is Fun” loop until x = 6 display “Programming is Fun” end
  • Indicate what will be displayed after the following code has been executed if the user enters the following empNum 90008936, deptCode HT, annSal 45000, empnum 90008966, deptCode AY, annSal 85000, empNum 90008745, depCode KC, annSal 30000, empnum 0. CalculateIncreases ~ As no sentinel has been suggested, an employee number of 0 will terminate the program display “Enter the employee number for the first employee” enter empNum totalIncAmt = 0 do while empNum <> 0 display “Enter the department code for this employee” enter deptCode display “Enter the current annual salary for this employee” enter annSal select case deptCode case “AY” incAmt = annSal * 0.06 case “HT” incAmt = annSal * 0.063 case “KL” incAmt = annSal * 0.069 case Other incAmt = annSal * 0.058 endselect annSal = annSal + incAmt totalIncAmt = totalIncAmt + incAmt display “Enter the employee number for the next employee” enter empNum loop display “The total amount for annual increases is R”, totalIncAmt end

We are using Programming Logic and Design Tenth Edition Joyce Farrell. This text book does not have any questions with pseudo code like this. My biggest issue is determining when a loop ends and when it's a nested loop. It's just do dam confusing. Although I've read that in the real world as a developer you spend a lot of time trying to understand messy code so I wonder if my lecturer is unknowingly helping me prepare for this?

Would you take a 20% pay cut to get your first IT/networking job?

I'm 21 and currently working in a customer service/contact-centre role. There is no IT department in my company and there is also no room for growth. However it is stable job and not too stressful. I've been trying to transition into IT, and my long-term goal is to become a network engineer.

I've completed CompTIA A+, I'm studying an IT diploma part-time, and started building a home lab.

Based on the job advert, the role involves things such as:

Installing, configuring and maintaining network equipment

Troubleshooting network and connectivity issues

Router configuration

Wi-Fi troubleshooting/configuration

Working with fibre connections

Working with MikroTik and Ubiquiti equipment

Providing technical support to customers

Assisting with network installations/upgrades

Travelling to customer sites when required

Unfortunately, it pays 20% less then my current role. This means I don't have much to spare after I sort our transport fees, university fees and I do give some money to my dad. I buy groceries for the house occasionally as well. I live with my parents.

The working schedule is also 4 days on / 2 days off.

I understand that the job may involve some basic support and grunt work, and I'm not expecting to walk straight into a network engineering position. My thinking is that getting actual professional networking experience could help me move toward Network Technician/NOC roles and eventually Network Engineering.

I've spoken to quite a few people around me and almost everyone has told me not to take the job because of the pay cut and the uncertainty. I can understand their perspective, but I'm wondering if they're looking at the short-term financial situation rather than the long-term career trajectory.

My understanding is that your first job in IT is the hardest to get. I just started applying to jobs 2 weeks ago and then I get this offer. I passed the interview and they want me to start on Tuesday.

UPDATE: Thanks for the comments. I've decided to take it.

I'm thinking of getting a motorbike with a very tight budget. Please advise?

Hello riders,

I'm thinking of getting a motorbike for travelling to work. My place of work isn't that far from where I live for now. I might be job hoping for the next 2 years so I need a bike that can travel long distances as well (70km).

I have never ridden a motorbike before and I don't know anything about motorbikes. I would like to get this big boy bike but from what I've read, the brand isn't that great, they require tons of maintaince and aren't great for long distances. I love this bike tho because it fits perfectly within my budget.

https://bigboyfourways.co.za/shop/big-boy-velocity-150/

So I came across this honda but this one doesn't look like it could do 70km daily.

https://www.honda.co.za/motorcycles/ace-125-za

My max budget is R25 000.00 for the bike and I guess I would need like R5000.00 for protective equipment as well.

I earn R6000.00 per month. Buying this bike would empty my savings but I would save a lot of time travelling every day and transportation fees. Riding a bike does look fun as well. Whether I get one now or not, I will definintely get one in the future. However my reasons for getting one now is only for practicality's sake.

Not sure if I should just stick lift clubs and taxis until I can afford something better?

Looking to get a helpdesk job ASAP. Got my A+, 3 years customer experience and am currently studying for an IT diploma. Looking for good youtube tutorials for building a homelab.

Hey everyone. I'm not sure where to start with my home lab. I bought a desktop. It's an i3 8th gen with 16GB of ram (Lenovo V530)

I was checking some youtube videos but most of them use like a Linux based server. Not sure if I should start with that. Would appreciate any good video recommendations that take you step by step.
