Landlord Increasing Rent Illegally?
Hi there! I have searched for similar posts to this but have failed to find guidance, so I am choosing to ask myself.
My lease is up on 5/31; last week, I requested a lease renewal from our landlord. I did so because I want the stability of a year-long lease and did not want any surprises that could arise from a month-to-month.
EDIT: I intentionally waited until we were after the 60-day period to ask for the renewal.
Well, my roommate just got off the phone with our landlord who told her they would be sending us the new lease that contains a rent increase; however, the increase will not take place until July 1st. So, I have two questions/concerns:
Seems to have deleted my concerns (?)
1: How do I fight this rent increase given it is coming way too late as per the 60-day window?
2: Can a landlord bake a rent increase into a new lease? July 1st is still not more than 60 days.
Any advice is welcome! We have lived in this unit for 2 years.
