Tipping culture in Costa Rica
My family and I will be heading to Costa Rica soon, and I had a question about tipping etiquette there.
We traveled to Japan a few months ago, where tipping is basically a no-no, which I was totally fine with. I know there are a lot of countries where Americans are known for over-tipping or bringing tipping culture with them, and I definitely don’t want to do that if it’s not appropriate.
So I’d love to hear from locals or people who live there:
In what situations do you tip, if at all?
What’s considered a normal or respectful amount?
Are there places where tipping is actually discouraged?
Honestly, I’d be perfectly fine being told not to tip at all. I just want to be respectful and avoid accidentally being “that tourist.”
Thanks in advance!
