Have any of you traveled to Eastern Europe?
I took a Danube river cruise from Budapest to Bucharest and the theme could have been “why socialism is a failed system”
The countries were littered with old Soviet era factories that were based on socialism. The factories helped to keep most people employed, but there was no incentive for innovation because the market was filled with products from other socialistic factories. People had no choice but to buy the products that were available.
But the transition to capitalism didn’t seem very smooth. Farmland was sold to multinational corporations to raise money to jumpstart infrastructure improvements. Many of the people seemed like serfs working the kings land.
I wonder what other people’s impressions were.
