TL;DR: Solved the Legion Go SSD heat soak without dremeling the backplate or buying bulky 3D-printed shells. Repurposed vintage gold heatsinks from a dead 2006 Gigabyte LGA775 board for the internal SSD & external 2TB enclosure, paired with a custom silent desk blower. Under a sustained 30W TDP load in heavy games: internal SSD stays at 60°C–62°C (peaked at 87°C stock!), external 2TB sits at 48°C (NAND at 33°C), with total noise at 42 dB. Total cost: $0.00.

1. Internal SSD Mod (Zero Cutting / 100% Reversible)

There is an accessible factory opening right above the 2242 SSD controller beneath the kickstand hinge:

  • Placed a thermal pad directly onto the controller through this cutout.
  • Mounted a low-profile Southbridge heatsink from an old Gigabyte board directly onto the pad.
  • Held in place purely by pad adhesion — zero glue, zero screws, detaches in seconds for warranty/portability.
  • Ergonomics: As shown in the side profile, the heatsink sits completely flush inside the kickstand cavity, leaving the kickstand angle 100% stock.

2. External 2TB NVMe Enclosure

  • Topped with the tall, finned Northbridge heatsink from the same motherboard for massive passive heat dissipation.

3. The "Sleeper" Silent Airflow Mod

To prevent ambient heat soak on the desk, I modded a cheap Ali desk fan:

  • Swapped out the rattly stock motor for a legendary dual ball-bearing Intel Delta DTC-AAR01 blower.
  • Runs whisper-quiet at 42 dB (literal room ambient) while looking completely stock from the outside.
  • Provides targeted laminar airflow across the external enclosure and under the open kickstand directly over the SSD heatsink.

4. Real-World Benchmarks (HWiNFO):

  • Sustained 30W Gaming Load:
    • Internal SSD Controller: 60°C – 62°C (Stock hit 100**°C**!)
    • External 2TB Controller: 47°C – 48°C (NAND at 33°C)
    • APU: 70.9°C – 72.4°C at flat 30.0W package power (PTM7950 phase-change pad doing its job)
  • Idle / Cooldown: External NAND drops to 29°C, internal controller to 46°C, APU to 35.7°C.
  • Noise Floor: 42 dB total system noise.

Old hardware scraps + basic airflow physics beat noisy, expensive clip-on mods every single day. Happy to answer questions in the comments!
