Great lakes analog for English ivy?
This is probably going to get me on native plants circle jerk or whatever, but here's my situation--i have a huge dead paper birch tree in my yard. It's got critters living in it, it's got woodpecker holes, it looks to be hosting sleeping bats and solitary bee nests--kind of a high traffic site at the edge of some woods. I thought it would have blown over by now, but it's going strong. It's not especially attractive by itself, and there's enough English Ivy in the neighborhood that I'm worried some will get established before I notice it. Same for poison ivy, which has a major effect on me.
Is there a non-poison ivy native that will climb a tree, eventually cover a tree, and add habitat or other value? It's tens of feet of bare trunk, so something like wild grape won't be able to grab on. Great lakes region, and, given the level of non-native/invasives already in the area, if be comfortable with a nativar/nativish plant. Heavy deer/rabbit/ground hog pressure, but I could probably fence it until it grew out of range.
