The "Karam Kshetra" painting is finally gone from the Army Chief’s office. A vital step back toward secularism after General Dwivedi’s controversial tenure.

The "Karam Kshetra" painting has officially been removed from the Indian Army Chief's office lounge in South Block, replaced by the institutional Indian Army insignia.

For months, this room was a flashpoint for intense debate. The painting was installed under the previous COAS, General Upendra Dwivedi, a move that many veterans and observers heavily criticized as pushing a specific ideological and religious agenda into the military's highest offices. By replacing the historic, decades-old oil painting of the 1971 Pakistani Surrender in Dhaka with mythological imagery of Chanakya and Krishna's chariot mixed with modern tanks, the move was widely called out as an attempt to align the apolitical armed forces with Hindutva cultural politics.

Critics and retired officers pointed out the troubling optics of removing India’s greatest historical military victory—won under a Congress government—to make room for religious symbolism. Veterans like Lt. Gen. H.S. Panag and Maj. Gen. K. Khorana have openly celebrated the removal, reiterating a core ethos of the armed forces: religious depictions must never enter an Army Chief's office.

The Indian Army’s greatest strength has always been its strict adherence to secularism and institutional neutrality, regardless of the personal background or beliefs of its leadership. The new Chief’s decision to take down the painting is a welcome correction, restoring the dignity and apolitical stance of the South Block lounge.

Hopefully, the iconic 1971 surrender painting will soon be restored to its original, rightful place.
