Choosing ETF’s and investments when nearing retirement.

PWL Capital’s video is often recommended when there are questions about which ETFs to buy.

It’s a great video and I have watched it several times. If you have a long or medium term time horizon it’s pretty straightforward.

But early on, Shannon Bender specifically says that as a rule one shouldn’t invest in ANY asset allocation ETF’s if they require the cash in 5 years.

So what then? What if one plans to withdraw portions each year (meaning money remaining will have a longer time horizon)? People will say put the money in buckets. OK but when do I start? Where do I put it? How much do I put? When do I pull the trigger for the next year?

What if you need to take more risk because you need to grow your capital? This one is tricky because you don’t afford to take the risk but you don’t afford not to. What is the happy medium considering one still has a few more years of steady income with decent funds to invest each year?

These are questions I am really struggling with.

Shelf life of my discontinued HG foundation?

Planning to stock up on the now discounted original formula of EL Doublewear foundation. I go through a bottle every 10-11 months. I already have an unopened bottle that I expect to finish by summer 2027 and was thinking of buying 3 more which would last to end of 2029 (3.5 years from now).

I’ve read that foundations have a shelf life of 2-3 years. ELDW is a pretty stable foundation though. I have never had a bottle oxidize on me even when I had a long period of having opened bottles (was mixing shades to pan a bad color match).

Am I pushing it with 3 more bottles or should I just buy 2?

These used to be under $1, now up 50%. I still refuse to buy the now cheaper American made Campbell’s though. I guess it’s a double win for my blood pressure to avoid altogether.
