Choosing ETF’s and investments when nearing retirement.
PWL Capital’s video is often recommended when there are questions about which ETFs to buy.
It’s a great video and I have watched it several times. If you have a long or medium term time horizon it’s pretty straightforward.
But early on, Shannon Bender specifically says that as a rule one shouldn’t invest in ANY asset allocation ETF’s if they require the cash in 5 years.
So what then? What if one plans to withdraw portions each year (meaning money remaining will have a longer time horizon)? People will say put the money in buckets. OK but when do I start? Where do I put it? How much do I put? When do I pull the trigger for the next year?
What if you need to take more risk because you need to grow your capital? This one is tricky because you don’t afford to take the risk but you don’t afford not to. What is the happy medium considering one still has a few more years of steady income with decent funds to invest each year?
These are questions I am really struggling with.
