Project Gorgon - What A Throwback For Me
I've been playing PG for about two months now. Gotta say, I keep discovering things that I enjoy. For me, what makes a game like this great is:
Ability to play solo with group play as an /enhancement/ not as a requirement
Little to no FOMO (if I make this one decision I can never take it back and have to start all over again to see the rest of the content)
Immersive world-building (some games the towns feel like "quest hubs" and that's all I see them as. I really love it when the design "brings me in" beyond that)
Plausible writing (Reading poor quality quest text just makes me not want to read quest text. Draw me in, please! Else I am playing "checklist simulator" with quests and the like...)
Project Gorgon does all of these things. But what I recently discovered is EVEN COOLER (for me anyway).
In this game, your main character can easily be your "alt" as well! This is due to heavy "layering" of each zone (lots of things to do). Let me give an example...
I chose 2 combat skills that seemed fun (psychic fire mage) and played for a while. I leveled up some skills for food appreciation and cooking too. Eventually I discovered some skills that I thought would be more fun.
So instead of making a new character to be my ice magic, while having a "main character" as a fire mage... I just turn on my new ice magic skill which of course is low level. So now I get to go back through the early zones, do things I missed, and level that up... without losing progress!
So while I'm leveling up my "alt" which is just my main character... I get to pick up flower seeds that I ignored before and level up gardening. While I do that, I'm leveling up musical performance too. While I explore around, I get to level up geology.
Then when I come back to my "main" skill, I'll be able to do all the foraging and geology in the high level areas.
I really like this, because I can consolidate my progress in one place but still enjoy making "alts" !
(p.s. also love how this game is not pay to win, and you can play a really long time on the demo)
