I’ve been thinking about this one, and honestly, I don’t think Andrew and Wren would have some super wholesome “cool uncle/dad figure” relationship.
If anything, I think their relationship would be mostly distant, awkward, and complicated.
Andrew already isn’t particularly fond of children. This is a man who spent his entire life dealing with Ashley, so I don’t exactly see him suddenly becoming Mr. Fatherhood because Wren was born.
But there’s another HUGE factor here:
Andrew knows exactly what Wren represents.
Wren is basically the most hardcore evidence imaginable that Andrew is in love with Ashley.
This isn’t just some feeling he can deny anymore. There is literally a child sitting in front of him whose existence is the result of that relationship.
And I think that would make Andrew’s relationship with Wren even more awkward.
I also don’t think Andrew would necessarily be happy about how much attention Wren gets from Ashley. (If she even cares about the kid enough)
He could absolutely get jealous and become bitter over that.
Anyways what do y’all think?
I’ve been thinking about what Ashley’s relationship with Wren might look like if we ever got to see more of it, and I honestly don’t think she would be a “bad mother” in the traditional sense. I don’t see her as someone who would intentionally hurt Wren or completely neglect him. I think she would make sure he’s fed, safe, clothed, and taken care of. But that’s also where my concern comes in. I feel like Ashley’s biggest issue would be that Wren would never truly be her emotional priority. Andrew is always going to be the center of her world. He’s the person she is most attached to and the person she revolves around, Because of that, I can imagine Wren growing up feeling like he is loved… but never fully hated, Just always second place. Ashley would probably do the responsibilities of motherhood, but the emotional connection might feel limited. Wren could end up being the “good enough” child who gets care, but not necessarily the same intensity of attention and attachment that the average child receives. And that’s why I think her motherhood would be interesting narratively. The tragedy wouldn’t be that Ashley is a monster of a mother. It would be that she is a mother who does the minimum required, while her strongest emotional energy is still directed toward Andrew. A bland, forgettable mother can sometimes be more realistic and painful than an outright terrible one.
Obviously this is just my interpretation, and I’m curious what everyone else thinks. Do you think Ashley would genuinely grow into putting Wren first, or would Andrew always remain her #1 priority?
