The Hidden Figure With Close Ties to Bill Gates and Jeffrey Epstein

Melanie Walker, the Hidden Figure With Close Ties to Bill Gates and Jeffrey Epstein

When Gates appears before Congress this week, he will have to answer questions about exchanges revealed in the Justice Department's release of Epstein files. The role played by Melanie Walker, who maintained close ties with both men, is expected to come under scrutiny.

The Seattle doctor is one of many figures who populated Epstein's world. She has claimed she was introduced to Epstein by Donald Trump in the 1990s. She later developed a close relationship with Prince Andrew and was a longtime partner of Steven Sinofsky, a former Microsoft executive who also had ties to Epstein.

Walker may have been most significant as one of the people who helped Epstein gain access to Bill Gates's circle after Epstein's 2008 conviction for soliciting a minor for prostitution. She did so while working at the Gates Foundation and later Gates's private office.

The Gates Foundation has reportedly launched its own investigation into its Epstein connections through the law firm WilmerHale. Investigators have reportedly examined Walker's role and the nature of her relationship with Gates.

Compared with many other Epstein associates, Walker, now 54 and a professor at UW Medicine, has remained largely out of public view, although her name and messages have surfaced in media reports.

Her anonymity was partly maintained through legal efforts to have her name redacted from Justice Department files. She did not allege sexual abuse by Epstein and has not filed claims against his estate. Her attorney argued her name should remain private because Epstein introduced her to two professional contacts who later sexually propositioned her.

Despite the redactions, people familiar with the matter have identified her correspondence and described her interactions with Gates and Epstein. Over time, Walker's relationship with Gates and Melinda French Gates became strained, according to the documents. Yet she appeared to remain loyal to Epstein until his death in 2019.

Walker’s attorney, David Fleissig, described her as "a survivor of Jeffrey Epstein" who endured "a coercive relationship that spanned decades and ended only with his death."

A spokesperson for Gates stated that Gates was unaware of the nature of Walker and Epstein's relationship, their shared motives, or the details of their history together.

The spokesperson also said correspondence showed Epstein actively encouraged Walker to pursue a sexual relationship with Gates.

In 2017, Walker discussed encounters she had with Gates while working on a consulting contract for his private office. She left later that year.

According to Gates's spokesperson, the relationship between Walker and Gates was consensual and ended amicably. Walker allegedly continued reaching out to Gates periodically afterward.

Gates has publicly stated that his interactions with Epstein were a mistake and did not involve illicit conduct. His spokesperson further stated that Gates had never had an improper relationship with any employee of the Gates Foundation or Gates Ventures.

Early Connections

Born Melanie Starnes, Walker grew up in Laredo, Texas, and graduated with honors from the University of Texas.

Walker has told several people that Donald Trump introduced her to Epstein at New York's Plaza Hotel in the early 1990s. In a 2018 email she wrote, "I've known Jeffrey 28 years and this isn't a joke — Donald Trump introduced us."

Walker said Epstein initially discussed the possibility of Victoria's Secret modeling but later encouraged her to attend medical school instead.

They remained in contact for decades. Records show Walker listed an address in a building where Epstein controlled multiple apartments and housed associates and victims. Epstein also referred to her as his "science adviser."

Walker later developed a friendship with Prince Andrew after being introduced by Ghislaine Maxwell.

By the early 2000s she was living with Microsoft executive Steven Sinofsky in Seattle. In 2006 she joined the Gates Foundation.

There she became friends with Boris Nikolic, Gates's chief science adviser. In 2009, after learning Nikolic would be moving to Gates's private office, Walker spoke highly of Epstein and downplayed his criminal conviction.

Nikolic later met Epstein and would go on to exchange hundreds of messages with him. He has since described Epstein as a "master manipulator" and expressed regret about their association.

Emails and messages suggest Walker repeatedly vouched for Epstein among Gates Foundation contacts, often speaking of him with admiration.

Epstein's Pursuit of Gates

For Epstein, access to Bill Gates represented a major opportunity. Association with one of the world's richest and most influential philanthropists could help restore his credibility after his conviction.

Before a January 2011 meeting between Gates and Epstein, Walker emailed Gates describing Epstein as one of her closest friends and crediting him with influencing her decision to attend medical school.

She described Epstein as discreet and suggested he moved among exceptionally attractive and influential people.

Gates has acknowledged meeting with Epstein multiple times between 2011 and 2014, including at Epstein's Manhattan townhouse, to discuss philanthropy.

Around 2013, Walker left the Gates Foundation for a role at the World Bank while continuing to be paid by the foundation.

In August 2014, Walker sent Gates what appeared to be a warning about Epstein. She advised Gates to maintain "a healthy distance for anything of a personal nature."

Walker wrote that Epstein often appealed to the weaknesses and vulnerabilities of powerful individuals.

At the same time, Melinda French Gates reportedly developed a strong dislike for Epstein after meeting him and never wanted to see him again.

Walker also complained in messages to Epstein that Melinda was acting against her through foundation channels and that she wanted to leave.

Relationship With Gates

In January 2017, Epstein asked Walker whether she had slept with Gates. She responded that they had instead spent significant time discussing ideas together.

Later that year Walker joined Gates's private office. According to messages cited in the Justice Department files, this was around the time her relationship with Gates became sexual.

Walker described aspects of that relationship in messages to Epstein.

In July 2017, while attending an Alzheimer's conference in London, Walker texted Epstein that Gates was "very gross" and "not the person ppl think." She described him as a distraction and said she felt trapped.

A Gates spokesperson disputed the characterization and stated that other communications from the same period showed Walker expressing positive feelings about Gates.

Walker later sought Epstein's advice during negotiations regarding her departure from Gates's private office.

In August 2017, Epstein coached Walker on how to communicate with Gates regarding workplace disputes and proposals.

By November 2017, after not receiving a response from Gates on one of her proposals, Walker discussed possible leverage she believed she possessed.

She wrote:

"Yes. I have a 'blue dress' emails and a few other embarrassing things and yes the stories are so eerily similar to all in media that he sounds weinsteinlike. I cant be the only one."

The Gates spokesperson responded that Gates never engaged in coercive, predatory, or nonconsensual sexual behavior.

After Epstein

Following her departure from Gates's private office, Walker remained in contact with Gates. Documents indicate they exchanged occasional messages about science, COVID, and family matters.

In February 2019, Walker informed Epstein that she had met with Gates, discussed science, and eaten cheeseburgers together. She reported telling Gates that he owed Epstein a phone call.

A Gates spokesperson stated that Gates had no contact with Epstein after 2014 and never used Walker as an intermediary.

Epstein was arrested on federal sex-trafficking charges in July 2019 and died in jail the following month.

JUST IN: Dean Reads Notes Of Redacted Epstein File About Trump's Relationship With Epstein

THIS CONFIRMS THAT THERE ARE UNECESSARY REDACTIONS AND FILES THAT HAVE BEEN ILLEGALLY WITHHELD, VIOLATING THE EFTA!!

Rep. Dean presents the video as evidence that Department of Justice redactions in the Epstein files violate the Epstein Files Transparency Act (EFTA), which prohibits withholding information to protect against political embarrassment. Critics argue that redactions covering public figures like Donald Trump, rather than victims, constitute illegal censorship under the Act, while the DOJ maintains these actions are necessary to protect victim privacy.
