Tamil Nadu's naming inconsistency - how can we push for a standardization?
This is not a new problem. There are already several posts in this subreddit discussing the confusion around naming conventions in Tamil Nadu (example: https://www.reddit.com/r/TamilNadu/s/KXO2NrwMrc).
The problem is well understood. What I want to discuss is - what can we do about it?
My proposal is simple: Tamil Nadu government should standardize names as [CHILD'S GIVEN NAME] [FATHER'S OR MOTHER'S GIVEN NAME] - no initials.
This maps directly to the internationally recognized [GIVEN NAME] [SURNAME] format and resolves mismatches across Aadhaar, PAN, NEET, JEE, UPSC, visa applications, and more.
Most people are not even aware of these problems until they face one themselves. They continue using initials simply because there is no official guidance telling them otherwise. A government standardization would help people avoid these mistakes from the start - before the damage is done.
I am asking because I myself am affected by this.
I would love to hear from this community:
- Do you have a better proposal?
- Have you successfully brought a similar civic issue to TN CM or government officials?
- What worked - Reddit, X, petitions, RTI, media outreach?
I request this subreddit community to provide pointers on how to take this further and reach right officials.
