Fellowship vs Job Advice
I have to make the choice between starting a job in a new BMT program ( they just saw their first patients a month ago so the program is new new) or doing an oncology fellowship with the hospital and service I rotated with. Here are what the offers entail:
BMT Offer
- Base: $110,000
- RVU: $40 per 2,750+
- CME: $1,500, 3 days
- 401k: 2% match
- Standard benefits
- PTO: 17 + 7 holidays + 1 wellness day
- Schedule to be found out on Monday, mainly outpatient
- 2 year contract (this worries me because I am not sure if I can stay in this city due to job opportunities not being great for my boyfriend once he graduates in December)
Fellowship Offer
- Base: $70,000 (140k if I stay after fellowship)
- CME: $1,500, 7 days, some mandatory conferences they will pay for and will be expected to do poster presentations
- Standard benefits
- PTO: 15 + 8 holidays + 1 wellness day
- 7am - 3pm
- Research opportunities, mentor, training in each oncology specialty, dedicated didactic time each week and attend medical oncology fellowship lectures
The BMT offer worries me due to the contract and it being the very beginning of a BMT program so I am not sure how well my training as a new grad will be or if it will be chaotic. My partner who graduates in December also does not have the best job market in this city which makes the contract worrisome if we need to move for his work. Fellowship I know I will get great teachings with this hospital and be very well supported. I have only rotated BMT and it was my favorite and I'll get some experience in the fellowship but think that'll be where I end up for sure. Dont really know which to do. Would an oncology fellowship help get a job in bigger cities in oncology because thats likely where we will end up? Any advice on fellowships?
