When they realized that poverty a stricken women were using sacks to make clothes for their children, some flower mills started using flowered fabric for their sacks. [1939]

During the Great Depression, flour and feed mills noticed that impoverished mothers were using empty cotton sacks to sew clothes for their children. In response, companies began printing the sacks with colorful floral patterns and used water-soluble ink so the corporate logos would easily wash away. This took place in the United States (and parts of Canada) [1939]
