I’ve been working on a custom home office project (lots of plywood built-ins and and I’m stuck on the rug.

I’m debating between a 6x6 and a 7x7 square rug. I've tried 5x7 and 6x8 and neither work.

  • The 6x6: Feels a bit more "minimalist" and shows off more of the hardwood, but I’m worried it looks like a postage stamp floating in the middle of the room. I also have the issue of tucking it under my desk enough that it will look imbalanced behind the chair.
  • The 7x7: Definitely fills the space better and bridges the gap to the built-ins, but is it too much rug for this footprint?

Context: The desk is about 72" wide. I’m leaning towards the 7x7 , but I’ve been staring at this for too long and need fresh eyes.

What do you guys think? Does the larger rug ground the room better, or should I stick to the smaller one?

Attached are 2 images of the 6x6 and several of the 7x7 and where it fits in the wider space. Ignore the mess and empty shelves.
