DXing Ham Radio 2 way communication

Still new and learning so forgive my ignorance. I enjoy listening to air band on my XHDATA D-808. Besides this band I would like to know how i can listen to 2 way conversations of ham radio operators. My antenna is 100' long wire which is only about 12' above ground. I have a 40' tower in the works, which will help, but, what should I do for now? Eventually, probably next winter, I'll study for my license. For now I like to listen. I'm in Canada, above 55th latitude. Thanks in advance.

Tiny Roof

Our lake house has tin roofing. The home is one level bungalow. For the moment, my interest is listening to shortwave, and I'm highly interested is airband.i have a PL-330 and Nooelec V5 dongle. Currently, I use a 100' insulated long wire one end crimped insulator and bungy cord attached to a tree at about 12' high. Other end comes in through a window and is connected to a 3.5mm male which i plug into either the PL-330 or bare wire option for SMA connect to the SDR. We are located in the Boreal forest region of Canada, just above 55 deg Latitude. Why do I hear one or two stations?
