this is how the apt looked on move-in. it looks like this used to be attached. the soot gives me pause. Edit: i realize now that you can’t see the gas pipe,this is the heater. the ductwork is supposed to stretch to the top of the heater, there are some disconnected parts. maintenance is supposed to come today (heater will not be needed until the fall). i was surprised that the ductwork just points towards the flue, is is not supposed to create a seal? I’m used to furnaces where the ductwork comes out of the unit,but i don’t know how it works internally.
