Trying to start freelancing as a Unity gameplay programmer — feeling stuck and need advice
Hi everyone.
I'm a Unity developer, more on the gameplay programming and game system sides with C# (using visual studio mostly). Recently i started trying to make freelancing and i'm already stuck.
In upwork i mostly find on the Unity platform things like: "help me publish my game", Game design projects, unreal/godot work, art/animation/UI related stuff and so on...
while on the other hand my stronger skills are more programming related such as:
Gameplay systems, Custom Inspector, save/load system, Optimization, Character controller, Tools and Editor Window etc.
On fiverr, i've already setup a couple gigs such as "I will implement a save/load system using json or binary" or "I will optimize and clean your unity c# code" but most of the messages I receive are by bots (i think) using strange links pretending to be interested clients, and i didn't have any real client yet.
My question for the more experienced Unity freelancers:
- What kind of gigs/projects should I offer to do?
- Are unity game programming gigs too niche?
- Should I focus on fiverr/upwork, or try something different? (i already used GDF GameDevFreelance)
I've been using Unity for years now and i do love programming/game systems but nowadays I'm just feeling that as freelancer you are quite limited unless you do art/design.
Thank you for your advice and for your time 💛
