Advice for serious tutors

You sign up to a platform in order to make money but you fail to make full use of the platform and all the information provided. Then you go to an altogether different website and complain when things go wrong. Those things could have all been avoided had you used the website properly!!!

What can you get on the Preply site that you won't get anywhere else? Information and advance warning on changes, and how to work with them, peer review and support, advice and help when you don't understand something, advice on how to perfect your profile, advice on rate increase, and probably much more that I can't think of now.

Any tutor who thinks they can do without that site and all the contents I've just mentioned is doomed to failure. This sub is great but it is NOT a substitute for the platform's own site. It's true that there are many posts not worth the bother but you can scroll past the obvious dross. If you want to make money from tutoring and if you take yourself seriously, make a habit of checking in to the Community pages once a day between lessons.

At the moment there are 2 big issues that many tutors have suffered: the costly scams and the new ST metrics. However, if you were checking in to the Community regularly you would've read about all of that long before getting caught on the wrong side of it.

Now go ahead and downvote solid good advice from a tutor with years of Preply experience.

Death Inc.

Once again, I'm watching something out of character - blame the heatwave in France, silliness is all I can focus on - and I have a question.. why does this funeral parlour have a restaurant / cafeteria?

Heatwave, gone tomorrow

I wish I could schedule this post for about 10 months in the future. The heat, the air conditioning, the emergencies, the unbearable heat of it all .. it's all they speak of in the news at the moment. Every channel, every news hour, every talk show.

As it happened last year.

And as it will happen next year.

With no action and no change.

Younger

I am way too old for this series but out of sheer boredom and being tired of gory Nordic series I started it.. and it's doing me the world of good. It takes my mind off the daily crap that life's dishing out to the world at the moment.. I don't have to think ... I love the outfits and the buzz and the modern jargon and some of the zany characters ... I love the fact that the background is publishing and these young people are mad about literature.. the plot is predictable and yet still watchable.

Highly recommended for light fun.

Gardening service providers are very strange

I've been in the Finistere for 3 years. During this time I've used several service providers for my property and almost everyone has been reliable and professional. Except the ones that offer gardening services. These are the issues I've had to deal with:

  • people who advertise their services but never answer their phones or reply to emails.
  • people arriving to quote or do the work unannounced and ignoring the arranged date and/or time. This drives me nuts because I work from home and cannot be interrupted and I plan my days meticulously around work and these service providers. I explain this to them and they still refuse to adhere to arrangements.
  • ignoring my request to please call or send me a message in advance if time/date cannot be respected.
  • a complete refusal to use WhatsApp - why are Bretons so against it?
  • people who advertise gardening services but in fact will only do clearing of grass and overgrown areas, in other words refusal to do small general gardening tasks such as preparing or weeding flower beds, trimming hedges, sweeping leaves, etc. This part is very puzzling because if I pay by the hour, why do they not want to do simple easy tasks?
  • a gardener who refused to work in the garden because it was too wet and dirty.

I pay well and on time. I offer coffee etc. I am polite. I never turn them away when they mess up my schedule and cause me inconvenience. I am generous with payments such as paying in full even if they finish earlier than planned. Is this attitude typical of rural areas? How is it allowed to go on unchallenged and unimproved?

The secrets we keep

What do you all think of this series? I'm finding the dialogue asinine. It happens quite often with dubbed series from Nordic countries, but this is excessive. Also some of the characters are beyond shallow and / or obnoxious. The more I watch the worse it gets and yet I want to see whodunit.

Anyone else feel the same?
