Is the old trail that starts near the Upper Cascade Lake to Cascade and Porter still open? Or is the newer trail from the Mt Van Hoevenberg Rec Center the trail to use?

Hi all,

I'm starting on the 46 this summer, and am deciding getting some new hiking shoes or a good pair of hiking sandals. For sandals, I've worn Keen closed toe sandals for a long time now, and always liked them. Would they be suitable for hikes like Cascades and Porter, and other peaks that I'm likely to do this first summer? I figure it will be a couple of years before I get the whole 46 done.
