Is Bright Eyes just schmultzy folk?

My gf and I bought tickets to the built to spill/ bright eyes’ dual tour. I like built to spill bc I like fuzzy guitars. I don’t know why but I thought Bright Eyes were a shoegaze band? And then I like listened to their top songs and it’s all over-the-top, corny folk music? Does Bright Eyes suck?
