Overloading a Mic Preamp to use as a light distortion?

I was thinking of picking up a cheap used GAP Pre73 jr mk2, but I wanted to use it essentially as a guitar pedal by using a boost before it to overload it and then to my amp. Has anyone tried this to any success? Perhaps I would be better off just purchasing a pedal format preamp?
