I’m in the middle of a pretty stressful MVP build and would really value some honest perspective. We’ve raised some initial funding, but the cost of hiring strong full-stack engineers locally is brutal, and I’m trying to figure out whether outsourcing can help us move faster without burning through the runway too early. Founders are split on it, and I keep hearing both success stories and horror stories. Outsourcing can be a practical choice for startups when the scope is clear, communication is tight, and the team is set up to deliver maintainable code rather than just a quick launch.

My biggest concern is ending up with something that looks fine on the surface but turns into a maintenance nightmare the moment we need to add new features. On one side, I’ve seen startups build and launch with offshore teams successfully; on the other, I’ve heard plenty of cases where poor communication, weak quality control, and hidden costs wiped out the expected savings. I need to make a decision soon so we can start building with confidence.

A few things I’m trying to get clarity on:

- Does outsourcing actually save money over time, or do you end up paying again later to clean up the code?

-What are the non-negotiables when evaluating an agency or dev shop?

- Is it better to bring in a technical lead or fractional CTO first, or can a non-technical founder manage the process directly?

- How do you handle time zone gaps without slowing the project to a crawl?

I’d love to hear from people who have launched with an external team, especially if you learned what to do the hard way. What made it work for you, and what would you never repeat?
