I've tried doing bubble lettering a couple of times, but I never feel confident about my highlights. Does anyone have some insight that might be helpful?

I've been doing some work on black wrapping paper. My idea was to find a suitable surface that I could use for practice with my acrylic brush pens. I wanted something inexpensive, with a smooth surface, gentle on delicate brush nibs, and something that would show off their bold opaque colors. Black gift wrapping paper checks those boxes, but it is not without its drawbacks. For one, the super slick surface isn't the greatest for holding colors, and because of that colors will often appear more transparent or less bold. Also, the surface is very delicate. I used a soft brush to wipe off some hairs that handed landed on it, and the bristles actually left scratch marks. Overall, it's not bad as a means for practice, but if anyone knows of a better alternative that is economically viable, please let me know.

One of my earliest attempts where I managed something decent

On my quest to find adequate black paper to practice on using my acrylic brush nibs, I discovered black wrapping paper. It's a little slippery, slow drying, and the super slick surface isn't the best for holding colors, but it does a decent job, good enough for practice, colors definitely pop and much, much cheaper than Bristol paper, or most all the other black alternatives with a smooth enough surface. I'm not totally sold though. So, If any of you have any better alternatives for black practice paper I'm all ears.
