Bigger pack or smaller bag/quilt?

Looking to do 1-2 nights travelling around 10 miles each day with my son (13, so I'll be carrying a good share of kit).

Camping will be fair weather, not too high or exposed, in England.

I've camped lots, van camped, bivvied out in the woods etc but haven't hiked to my spot for many years so need all new gear, or a massive backpack!

Bought a Decathlon MT900 2 person dome to use instead of my WC Trisar 2D which was very bulky. Saved 2kg and halved the bulk, if not more. Was superb in the garden last week!

My bag is an old RAB goose down bag, about 16 litres packed and 1500g.

I bought a 50l backpack (Osprey Atmos AG) and a test pack shows there's not much room once the sleeping bag is in!

I have two options

- return the pack and get a 65l. Won't cost much more.

- buy a smaller sleeping bag, something around 8l and 850-900g looks like it would work but of course is a lot more money.

So big bag, or new sleeping bag or even a quilt?

A bigger pack would be cheaper but less practical and harder to carry.

I am a restless side sleeper, sometimes feel the cold around 5am but overall feel fairly warm. Would usually have something like a micro down jacket I could pop on in the bag for extra warmth.
