Sourcing wood for starting

Newbie here. Read the wiki. Took a full day into class and has a blast!

I’ve picked up a used Delta LA200 that appears in good shape. And tonight, I stopped by woodcraft and picked up 4 starting gouges (buy once, cry once). I have a 4 day weekend coming up. I want to build my bench and then, start turning!

What would be some good, cheap, wood to start with? We have tons of scrap lumber around, mostly yellow pine 2x4 scarps. And a pile of a maple tree we took down about a month ago (logs and branches). I’m thinking wands or something like that super simple just to learn how the machine works. So… just want to make sure using an old 2x4 or something wouldn’t be bad. Should I cut it into 2x2s first?
