Is anyone else watching more re-releases this year than new movies?
So I went to the theaters today to see the re-release of Top Gun Maverick (which btw, super fun movie. Totally worth the rewatch). But it got me thinking:
Movies I have seen so far this year:
Top Gun Maverick, Project Hail Mary, Ben Hurr, Iron Lung, Fellowship of the Ring, Two Towers, Return of the King , The Silence of the Lambs,,
Coming near the future, I got:
In the Grey, Maybe Mortal Kombat, Maybe Street Fighter, Maltese Falcon, Fifth Element, Ocean's Eleven, Rocky, Backrooms, Maybe Young Washington (if its good), Maybe Coyote vs. Acme, Maybe Resident Evil, Digger, Godzilla minus zero, Dune 3, Werwulf,
10-ish re-releases 13-ish New films (maybe, depends on how good a few of them end up being)
Near the halfway point of this year, and I have seen way more re-releases this year than new movies. By the end of the year, it will be pretty close to dead even. I dont think i've had this happen before in a movie going year before, at least personally. Dont know what this says for the movie theater industry. I know, at least compared to my coworkers in my office, i see movies in the theaters a lot. Some of my buddies have gone once so far this year, and that was just cause their kids wanted to see the new mario movie.
I wonder if theaters see how successful old re-releases are and just start pivoting to that more and more. My viewing of Top Gun was near packed and I definitely would go to see the Prestige or New Hope in theaters again.
Is anyone else in this position? What do yall think this means, if anything, for the theater industry?
