Cherry and canker questions

We lost our4 year old bing cherry to canker this past winter. It never budded out even now that it’s almost June and we’re getting ready to have it cut down and the stump grinded. We love our cherries so we want to plant a montmorency but want it located somewhat in the same area. Maybe a few feet away. Is that safe even if the one that’s being removed had canker? I know it can be fungal or bacterial so wasn’t sure. And anything we can do to help prevent canker on the new tree from ever happening?

It’s in a 3 gallon nursery pot. It sits under a Japanese maple. It gets morning sun and then dappled light most of the day as it comes through the Japanese maple. It unfortunately has to stay in a container due to me being in zone 7. anyway the questions I had were. How many seasons of growth until it starts adding height to its trunks right now it’s level with the surface. Some fronds are around 1 1/2-2 feet in length. And I get around 2 new fronds a week roughly. I keep the media moist but not soaking wet and not dry either. Another question I have is. Some fronds are wonky. I notice new fiddleheads coming in in all sort of directions. Is this normal when it’s young? And will it sort out as it gets older or am I doing something incorrectly with lighting situation etc.

So not even thinking I just repotted some P. Densiflorums that I got from Walmart into a 35% pumice 35% lava rock 10% sand and 20% soil mix and watered them straight away…. It was only afterwards did I think about the damaged root areas. Will they be ok? I usually don’t water for a week after repotting.
