The similar destinies of Isabella II of Spain and Maria II of Portugal
Sharing close familly ties (not all the links are shown in this tree), Isabella II of Spain and Maria II of Portugal endured a similar conflict when they accessed the throne of their respective countries around the 1830's. It was the time when Europe was moving from absolute monarchs to constitutional ones. Curiously enough, both queens were enthroned when they were still too young to reign, and in both cases it was their respective uncle who tried to take the crown. While Carlos (Spain) and Miguel (Portugal), the uncles of Isabella and Maria, respectfully, were supported by the more conservative, traditionalist, and religious factions of the country, the queens, and in their name the regent or father, had to seek the support of the liberal and progressive political parties. Civil war broke in both countries and in each case the queens rose victorious after long conflicts that drained the countries out of resources and men. To this day, we can still see Carlist and Miguelist pretenders to the thrones of Spain and Portugal. Nevertheless, the line of Maria II ended in 1932, when Manuel II, the last king of Portugal, died. In Spain, however, the line of Isabella II still lives to this day in the current monarch: Felipe VI.
That said, the tree is very simple, but I wanted to highlight this curious piece of trivia through it.
