What are the consequences of a repossession or voluntary repossession, does it matter which?

In a situation where my nephews license was revoked, his loan is upside down and insurance are through the roof, so we are trying to figure out if it’s worth just letting the car be repossessed. What are the future consequences for his credit? Is this doomsville?
