Trip Intinerary for mom and her son
Hi everyone! I’m travelling to Japan with my son from October 18–31, 2026. We’re staying in Heiwajima and using it as our base for the entire trip. Is there any must have apps I should download or things I should prebook in advance?
My son is extremely interested in Japanese culture, food, ramen, trains, Pokémon and anime, so I’m trying to give him a trip that includes both fun attractions and meaningful cultural experiences. This is our current schedule:
- Oct. 18: Arrive at Haneda at 7:00 p.m. and check into our hotel
- Oct. 19: Jet-lag recovery day around Heiwajima
- Oct. 20: Sensō-ji, Samurai Ninja Museum, Sumida Aquarium and Tokyo Skytree
- Oct. 21: Ueno Park/Zoo, Ameyoko and Akihabara
- Oct. 22: TeamLab Planets, Odaiba, Unicorn Gundam and LEGOLAND Discovery Center
- Oct. 23: Mount Fuji and Hakone tour
- Oct. 24: Yomiuriland
- Oct. 25: Relaxed morning, Shibuya/Harajuku and a Fast & Furious Tokyo Drift car experience from 6:00–10:00 p.m.
- Oct. 26: Shinkansen to Shin-Yokohama, Ramen Museum and possibly the ramen-making class
- Oct. 27: Art Aquarium Ginza, Pokémon Center Tokyo DX and Tokyo Tower
- Oct. 28: Sumo show with hot pot and geisha
- Oct. 29: Flexible weather or catch-up day
- Oct. 30: Final shopping, revisiting favourite places and packing
- Oct. 31: Relaxed final day before flying from Haneda at 9:55 p.m.
Does this schedule look realistic, or are any days too crowded? Are we missing an experience that would be especially meaningful for a child who genuinely loves Japanese history and culture?
We would also really appreciate recommendations for affordable but excellent traditional Japanese restaurants. We aren’t looking for expensive tourist restaurants we’d love small, locally owned places where we can enjoy authentic food and support the owners. Ramen, udon, soba, tempura, curry, yakitori and regional dishes would all be wonderful. Recommendations around Heiwajima or near the areas on our itinerary would be especially helpful.
I also have a question about gift etiquette. I own a Canadian ammolite company, and I would love to bring a few small polished ammolite freeforms from Alberta. Ammolite is a colourful gemstone formed from fossilized ammonite shell. Would it be appropriate to offer one as a small thank-you gift to a restaurant owner or local person we have a meaningful interaction with? There would be no expectation of anything in return and it would not be intended as business promotion. I simply enjoy sharing a small piece of Alberta with kind people. I completely understand that some people or businesses may be unable to accept gifts, so I would never pressure anyone.
Finally, I have a speech impediment and I’m extremely bad at speaking other languages, even when I practise. I want to learn some basic Japanese and make an honest effort, but my pronunciation will probably not be very good. Would Japanese people generally appreciate me trying, or could badly pronounced Japanese cause confusion or seem disrespectful? I’m happy to use a translation app when needed, but I don’t want my embarrassment to stop me from making an effort.
Thank you so much for any advice. We’re incredibly excited, and I really want to make sure we visit respectfully and give my son a wonderful introduction to Japan. He will be turning 11. I am taking him for his birthday. Hes also suuper into anime.
HELP - Random fear triggered
Hey,
So recently there was a gas leak in our neighborhood and my Anatolian detected it and got super terrified hes 9 months old. However since then because the leak was near a crosswalk now anytime he sees a crosswalk pole he gets extremely terrified if he hears it beep its even worse and will freak out. He will stop about 10feet away and refuse to go closer if I try to get closer he will literally tare himself away from me and run to a far distance and sit down and wait for me to get back to him. This obviously has caused some issues as there is a lot of crosswalks around here. Im wondering if anyone has dealt with a random fear triggering a dog and how they managed to help fix that problem.
Otherwise his behavior is normal. Hes happy, healthy, plays fine and eats normal. Not sure it it matters the only other thing that's different is he gets a boner when people pet him now which hes slightly uncomfortable with and will lay down to hide it lol figured that's normal as he gets older to discover there might be a relation to the crosswalks but who knows
Any advice or help would be greatly appreciated as I want to be able to walk him our 8-10km walk every night when it cools down....the last 4 days it's been 3-4km walks because we get to a cross walk he freaks and I need to take him home to calm down
🔥 My Anatolian in a glorified Snow White
Before anyone comes at me I did not intentionally put my dog at harm. He’s an Anatolian Shepherd channeling his inner Snow White he saw the deer and decided he wanted to be a 200 lb boulder and refused to move no matter how hard I pulled. Before I knew it the deer ran right up to him and my dog flopped down on his back while I calmly told the deer it’s cool please don’t kick my dog. Didn’t want it startling and getting defensive. Anyhow after he laid down they legit ended up booping, licking and pawing each other for 10mins before they decided Kay cool that was neat and moved on.
Nature provided me with some pretty awesome pictures. The deer is a wild deer… dogs a pet not sure if that voids the rules hopefully it’s cool 😎
Guard Dog they said…
My Anatolian wouldn’t hurt a fly and tries to befriend literally anyone and everything in a stubborn I see animal I become 200 lb boulder you cannot move me mom for I must unleash my inner Snow White…not going to lie I may have been shitting a brick in this situation. He refused to leave and my dog refused to move they continued to sniff boop and poke each other for 10mins before going their separate ways…i swear this dog would try to charm a bear
He’s the best dog though…might be a bit ambitious when it comes to friend making
