Getting back to the exact move that caused your ankle sprain
13 years into my climbing journey and it finally happened - a severe-ish ankle sprain.
I was on my outdoor project. Tries were going super well, the sit start is the crux but the topout is slopey and tricky. I was getting to the top every time and just hadn't managed to top it out yet. I sat down for another go, put my foot on the starting foothold, did two moves off the same foothold, literally 10cm off the ground.
Then I heard a loud snap from my ankle. My friend thought it was a tree branch snapping. My ankle's been really tender and very painful since. X-ray ruled out fractures, thankfully.
I really hope it will be okay in a few weeks time. It was just a super weird thing that this happened not even on a fall, but making a move, on a pretty good foothold.
I'm bummed out because the weather is spectacular now and I was feeling strong this season. I am already thinking about this darn project, and how I'm gonna feel getting back to the exact same move that caused this. I have no doubt in my mind I'll go back to bouldering, I just love it too much. But the idea of going back to the EXACT same move is a bit freaky to me. Does anyone have experience with this? How did it go for you? Did you send your proj? It's mostly mental and luck I guess? I just want to hear some experiences.
Stay safe out there 🥲
