DS job market for undergraduate students

Hi everyone,

I'm a dual Computer Science and Data Science major graduating in May 2027, and I’m looking for some insight from professionals currently working in the field.

My primary goal is to land a Data Science role right after graduation (I am fully open to relocation). However, I often hear that it’s incredibly difficult to break into the DS industry without a Master's degree.

I’d love to get your thoughts on a few things:

  • Is it truly that hard to get a DS job with only a Bachelor's?
  • Are there specific companies known for hiring undergraduate Data Scientists?
  • Would it be better to look for recent grad roles first and pursue a Master's later, or should I go straight into a Master's program right after undergrad?

Any advice, personal experiences, or general guidance would be hugely appreciated. Thanks in advance!

How to find fully funded MS programs in Data Science?

I am a current senior at Bucknell University majoring in Computer Science and Data Science, and I’m looking for some realistic guidance on funding graduate school.

My Background:

  • Transfer Student: I transferred to Bucknell from a Community College. Because of this timeline, I don’t have any traditional industry internship experience or return offers.
  • Research Experience: This past summer, I completed a research project focused on Data Science/ML.
  • Goals: I want to pursue graduate school (Master's) focusing on Machine Learning, and Data Science.

I come from a low-income family and absolutely cannot afford to pay out-of-pocket or take on massive debt for a Master’s degree. I am feeling incredibly stressed about the cost of attendance and the fact that I don’t have industry experience to fall back on. I really want to continue my education, but I need to find a way to do it with minimal to zero debt. If you could help me figure out this questions then it would be great help:

  1. Which universities are known for being generous with funding (tuition waivers + stipends via TA/RA positions) for Master’s students in CS/Data Science?
  2. Given my summer research experience, should I skip the MS and apply directly to PhD programs to guarantee funding? How competitive is the direct-to-PhD route for someone with one summer of research?
  3. Are there specific national fellowships or scholarships targeting low-income or first-generation STEM students that I should apply for this fall?
  4. How heavily will graduate admissions care about my lack of industry internships if I have undergraduate research experience?

Thank you so much for any advice or reassurance you can give. I'm feeling pretty overwhelmed right now and appreciate any insights!
