Should I stay or should I go?
Hi everyone.
I’ve been with my current company for 7 years. I’ve been remote since 2020, have a lot of flexibility, and the remote setup is honestly a big reason my husband and I have been able to live where we do. The downside is I haven’t had a raise in 3 years, despite taking on additional responsibilities recently after staffing changes. I did ask for a raise previously and was told the company’s financial situation didn’t allow for it.
Recently I interviewed for another position that would be mostly in-person. Originally the pay increase wasn’t enough for me to justify losing the flexibility, especially because my husband’s work situation may require us to relocate in the future. Because of that uncertainty, I declined the offer.
Now the company has come back unexpectedly and increased the offer significantly (about a $15k increase from my current salary) in hopes I’ll reconsider.
So now I’m stuck between:
Staying in a flexible remote role where I feel somewhat underpaid/stagnant but have lifestyle freedom.
Taking a significantly higher-paying in-person role that may be better for my long-term career/income growth, but less compatible with the uncertainty in my personal life.
I know no one can decide for me, but I’d genuinely appreciate perspectives from people who’ve had to choose between flexibility/stability vs. compensation/growth.
