Tampa - Apprentice Training and Job - Best way to go?

I am 31 with a Bachelor's degree from FSU in Biology. Although I love the subject, I've never found a job with enough earning potential unless I went for a masters and even then, salaries are very low. For the last 5 years, I been working in construction supply inside sales - think desk / phone job and I really want to get into a field that I am up and about working with my hands. I been considering a move to Electrician, HVAC or Plumbing technician with an apprentice route and leaning toward Electrician.

Now to choose and understand the different routes toward becoming an Electrical Technician. Which path/paths have the most opportunity in jobs, salary potential over time, and variety of skills learned and advancement?

It would also help to know how quickly I can get started. Is make the change and earning money starting in August of this year - doable?

Seems like the ibew path starts in July or January and I'm not sure how long the application process takes and whether even applying for the January class is feasible if that is the best route and I know I have been approved, I could wait that long.

Also there is Hillsborough Community College path - a good alternative? Quality training? Good companies to work with?

Thanks for any advice.
